Some of us don't buy food with lots of airmiles attached to it even though we shop in those nasty downmarket supermarkets that are Not Waitrose. Strangely enough, even in those nasty downmarket places some think only supply crap, it is possible to buy UK seasonal produce... Shock horror, you don't have to spend oodles of dosh in Waitrose to buy British seasonal food! No indeed. You go down the market and get both seasonal goods and ultra-cheap produce that fell foul the supermarket grad...

Right again. I have a very good local farm shop that supplies a wide range of different fruit and vegetables. It's only ever seasonal stuff , and it's usually half the price of the equivalent in Tesco's, never mind Waitrose. d. The farm shops I come across round here can be more expensive to buy from than A. N. Supermarket, for the same stuff that is supplied to the supermarket. Mind you, I do buy from farm shops if the stuff is nice. Got some lovely fresh beetroots from a farm stal...

But you don't really think you are doing some poor African farmer a favour when you buy out-of-season imported produce, do you? No, I'm not _doing him a favour_ you're back to the charity records now... I'm just buying stuff, and he's selling stuff - it's how the world works - I'm not doing the UK farmer any favours when I buy from him, he's simply selling stuff - of course he's also getting thousands of pounds in subsidy from my tax, and he's getting an artificially high price for the g...

I won't eat sh*t but nor will I pay through the nose for something edible. Trouble is, most cheapo supermarket produce is /merely/ edible - I prefer something that also tastes good. Prices in supermarkets are artificially low anyway and don't reflect the true cost of food production - but we'll end up paying for it in the long term anyway, when our natural environment is destroyed and our whole economy controlled by three companies... And the 3 companies will be Asdescoseburys, Ast...

When you pay three quid for a tiny pack of green beans in Tesco in January, how much of that do you think goes to the Kenyan farmer that grew the beans? Maybe a whole penny at most. The rest of it goes towards the costs of air freight, packaging the beans and irradiating them so they aren't all furry by the time they reach the shelves of your local shed, plus a large chunk to line the company's pockets. But you don't really think you are doing some poor African farmer a favour when y...
